How LoL Season Resets Work in 2025
League of Legends now operates on a "split" system with multiple ranked splits per year rather than one annual reset. At the end of each split, your rank is soft-reset — you're placed a certain number of divisions below where you ended, and you play five placement games to determine your starting rank for the new split.
The soft-reset amount depends on where you ended: Diamond players drop to Platinum, Platinum drops to Gold, Gold drops to Silver, etc. The purpose is to create climbing momentum early in each split and prevent rank stagnation.
How MMR Affects Your Reset
Your hidden MMR decays less aggressively than your visible rank. A player who ends Platinum I with high MMR (was climbing hard) may start Gold I–II and gain 25+ LP per win immediately. A player who ended Platinum I with low MMR (barely holding it) may start Silver I–II and have slow LP gains.
This is why climbing efficiently matters more than just achieving a rank — your MMR health determines next season's starting point and pace.
End-of-Split Strategies
The last 2 weeks of a split are critical. Win rate on your main increases your MMR going into reset. Avoid tilted sessions that tank your MMR. Play your most comfortable champion exclusively — this is not the time to experiment.
If you're on the bubble of a rank tier (e.g., Gold IV at 10 LP), playing it safe and avoiding demotion is often better than an aggressive push that risks yo-yoing. A stable Gold IV is better for reset seeding than an unstable Platinum IV.
Using Boosts to Maximize Split-End Rank
The most popular time to buy a boost on GG Market is the final 3 weeks of each split. Players who need one more division for the seasonal skin, border, or cosmetic reward book carries when the deadline is real.
Split-end boosts are also used for MMR cleanup — getting a clean winning streak going into reset sets you up a division or two higher at the start of the next split, worth far more than the cost of the boost.
Setting Up for a Strong New Split
On the first day of a new split, your MMR is calibrating. Prioritize games in your first 20 games: play only when mentally fresh, on your strongest champion, in your strongest role. Carry sessions early in the split create momentum that's very hard to stop.
If you start a new split poorly (first 5 games: 1 win 4 losses), take a 24-hour break. Your MMR will be low and every further loss compounds. Return fresh and use the early-season volatility in your favor with a win streak.
